June 25, 1997 * Economic Development [to Jul 1998]While Green Gables House might be closed to visitors until July 1, 1997, visitors to the Interpretative Centre can still get an inside look at Green Gables House through the use of technology. The Province of PEI and Parks Canada have cooperated to establish a virtual tour of each of the rooms of Green Gables House at the newly opened Interpretative Centre. A month or so before the fire, 18 pictures were taken in each of the rooms at Green Gables. The pictures were used to create a virtual tour of the house. Parks Canada has made it possible for visitors to the Interpretative Centre to take a virtual look at each room by using the computer provided in the centre. "The system is very easy to use. Visitors can use a mouse to move around the room to see how it looks. Although visitors are not able to go inside, they can certainly see what it looks like through the virtual tour. It is obviously not the real thing but it does provide a glimpse of the inside," said Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "We are very pleased to have cooperated with Parks Canada in establishing the virtual tours. We believe that this will be a significant benefit for those tourists who come to Green Gables before the house is re-opened on July 1, 1997. This virtual tour is also available on the Internet through the Province of Prince Edward Island's home page," Minister MacAleer stated. Media Contact: Ann Stanley
