Vice-Governor Lin Fanglue and senior officials from the Chinese Province of Hainan spent two days on Prince Edward Island this week. Prince Edward Island and Hainan have had a sister-province relationship since 2001.
The Vice-Governor met with Premier Ghiz and provincial ministers to discuss trade and partnership opportunities between the two provinces. The delegation also toured the wind test site in North Cape to learn from PEI’s expertise in wind energy technology.
“I was very pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Vice-Governor Lin and to further explore trade and cooperation between Prince Edward Island and Hainan Province,” said Premier Robert Ghiz. “Our sister-province relationship provides a unique opportunity to realize collaborative efforts which are mutually beneficial to both provinces.”
Holland College and the Atlantic Veterinary College also held meetings with the Hainan delegation to renew collaborative efforts currently underway.
“The Atlantic Veterinary College is eager to explore collaborative opportunities in areas that advance education, research and the outreach of our professional services,” says Dr. Donald L. Reynolds, Dean of the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI. “We are proud that our expertise has been the basis for progress regionally and internationally, and look forward to developing additional partnerships that have a positive impact on the health of communities at home and around the world.”
Dr. Brian McMillan, President of Holland College, welcomed the opportunity to discuss the college’s ongoing participation in projects in the Hainan region. “Given the economic priorities of Hainan Province and the college’s long-standing training partnerships in China, I look forward to deliberations with the Hainan delegation to discuss mutually beneficial opportunities. Hainan's interest in tourism and alternative energy aligns well with Holland College’s current training expertise,” he said.
Hainan is an Island province located in southern China.
