An upcoming initiative by students from the University of Prince Edward Island is aiming to further reduce the waste footprint generated by students.
The 1st Annual ‘Dump and Run’ is a project being organized by the Society for the Environment and Sustainability, a campus club of UPEI students. The primary aim of the project is to reduce the volume of waste generated by students as the school year draws to a close.
“The idea behind this project is simple. We’ll be setting up a drop-off location on campus to collect items that might normally be left curbside by departing students. Those items will then be sorted and made available through an upcoming yard sale so these items can be reused. Items that aren’t sellable will be donated to the Humane Society and other local charities,” said Vanessa Lutz of the UPEI Society for the Environment and Sustainability.
Items will be accepted by volunteers from the UPEI Society for the Environment and Sustainability over the next week and a yard sale will be held on
Saturday, April 25th at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre at the university. Acceptable items include furniture, clothes, appliances and electronics. The proceeds from the Dump and Run will go towards creation of a Student Sustainability Fund to support student-led environmental initiatives on campus.
“As important as it is to properly sort and dispose of waste it’s equally important to reduce the amount of waste being produced,” said Gerry Moore, CEO of Island Waste Management Corporation. “By providing a way for items to be reused and recycled is a great way to do that. I applaud the UPEI Society for the Environment and Sustainability for their leadership.”
