Update on Souris bridge construction

Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy
The temporary bridge in Souris will remain open until construction of the new bridge is completed, says Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar.

“Following consultation with the community, the construction of the new bridge will proceed without the use of a detour. Motorists will continue to travel on the temporary structure,” said Minister Biggar. “I want to thank the community for their patience and resiliency during this construction time, particularly given the record-breaking winter the province experienced.”

Minister Paula Biggar spoke with Souris Mayor David MacDonald earlier this week to discuss options for the opening of the new Souris bridge.

The existing Souris bridge was constructed in 1976. The new $7.3 million bridge will span over 128 metres and will stand a metre higher to account for the expected rise in sea level over its lifespan. It is anticipated the new bridge will open in August.

“After discussions with Minister Biggar I was very pleased that she felt that it would be quite suitable to have a little bit of a later opening and keep with the temporary bridge,” said Mayor David MacDonald.

While construction continues, delays can be expected for motorists using the temporary structure, and an alternate route will be posted.
