University Enrolment Statistics Released

Enrolment at Maritime universities decreased two per cent between 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission announced today, December 10, 2008.

The Commission has released final 2007-2008 statistics on enrolment at all public Maritime universities. Ten statistical tables and two databases are available for download from the Commission's website - www.mphec.ca – and include statistics on enrolment by province of origin, gender and age group.

Statistical highlights include:

--Enrolment in all three Maritime provinces has declined since the peak in 2004-2005. Total enrolment in 2007-2008: Nova Scotia 41,676 (down 6.0 per cent); New Brunswick 23,538 (down 5.1 per cent); Prince Edward Island 3,921 (down 1.8 per cent); and Maritimes 69,135 (down 5.5 per cent).

--The number of Graduate students increased 4.2 per cent in 2007-2008 over the previous year, and 9.9 per cent since 2003-2004. In 2007-2008 they represented 12.9 per cent of all students in Maritime Universities.

--The number of students originally from the Maritime Provinces attending Maritime Universities has declined 7.8 per cent, from 54,620 in 2003-2004 to 50,367 in 2007-2008.

--International students make up 9.7 per cent of all enrolments. This proportion has increased 1.4 percentage points since 2003-2004.

The Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission was established in 1974. The 20 members are drawn from the Maritime Provinces and represent higher education institutions, provincial governments and the general public. Its mission is to assist institutions and governments to enhance the post-secondary learning environment.

The Commission collects and maintains data pertaining to post-secondary education in the Maritimes and conducts research on the Maritime postsecondary sector. Reports and research articles are available on the website - www.mphec.ca - free of charge.
