Two New Bridges Improve Prince Edward Island’s Road Network

During the month of August The Prince Edward Island Department of Transportation and Public Works will further improve the Island’s road infrastructure for all road users. The Department will begin work to replace two bridges on the provincial road network.

The first of the two replacements is the Glenwood Bridge on Route 14, The North Cape Coastal Drive, in Glenwood, Prince County. Construction there is expected to get underway in mid-August. That bridge will be reduced to one lane only for most of the construction phase of the project. Traffic control personnel will be on hand to direct traffic in the daytime. At night an automated traffic control system will allow vehicles to cross from one side or the other. The final phase of construction will see the bridge close completely for two days only. A detour will be posted during that time. The new improved Glenwood bridge should be complete near the end of October.

The other bridge replacement will occur on the Fox River Road near Murray Harbour in Kings County. That bridge will be completely closed to traffic once construction begins in mid-to-late August. A detour will be posted along routes 18 and 348 for re-routed traffic. The new Fox River Road Bridge is expected to be complete around the first week of November.

The Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley says these two bridges will provide a marked improvement to the provincial highway network, “Our goal is to keep Island roads as safe as possible for all road users. The replacement of these two aging structures demonstrates this government’s commitment to that goal.”
