A new government investment to enhance recreational facilities in Kensington and to establish a camp to help children will benefit the health of the local community and the Atlantic Canada region, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair.

“The Island Community Fund is pleased to sponsor two great projects in the Kensington and Malpeque area to improve recreational facilities for health and wellness,” said Minister LeClair. “Recreational facilities make an important contribution to the quality of life of our rural communities.”

The total cost of the two projects is $428,000. The provincial government, is contributing approximately $300,000 with the community sponsors providing approximately $128,000 overall.

The Community Gardens Arena requires a complete refurbishing including many recommendations of an energy efficiency audit. The total cost of the project is $312,000. The provincial government, primarily through the Island Community Fund and Skills PEI, is contributing $203,000 to this project.

Camp Triumph’s mandate is to meet the complex needs of Atlantic Canadian children who are living with the impact of chronic illness. This camp is now located in Malpeque and Phase 1 of construction is now underway. The total cost of the project is $115,000. The provincial government, primarily through the Island Community Fund and Skills PEI, is contributing $96,000 to this project.

“Our Skills PEI programs give people the chance to experience the workplace and to get valuable skills while contributing to their community,” said Minister Allan Campbell, Innovation and Advanced Learning. “I can't think of a better way for our people to receive on-the-job training than by helping facilities like Camp Triumph and the Community Gardens.”

“Providing modern recreational facilities is a win-win for Islanders in the Kensington area. Assisting the start-up of Camp Triumph will serve children in need not only across the province but throughout Atlantic Canada for years to come,” said Mr. LeClair.

The Island Community Fund is a six-year $27.5 million program established by the provincial government to address infrastructure needs with a focus on rural communities.
