Tuna Trophy Presented

Fisher, Earl Gavin, of Tignish Run was recognized today for landing the largest Bluefin tuna of the season.

Premier Pat Binns presented Mr. Gavin with the first Premier's Cup. The award was established by the Premier in recognition of the rebound in the Island tuna fishery and the role of the sport fishery in the province.

"The bluefin landed by Mr. Gavin aboard his boat SCOTTIE G weighed 1272 pounds, with a dressed weight of 1018 pounds. It took him about two hours to land the tuna, and was one of two he successfully landed on September 5," stated Premier Binns. "I am pleased to present him with this trophy in recognition of his effort and his commitment to this fishery."

A total of 91 tuna were caught off Island shores this season, with a total weight of over 89 thousand pounds. It represents a significant rebound for the fishery.

Premier Binns says "the tuna fishery is on the rebound and we want the world to know about it. Details on the season have been made available to various media throughout the world in an effort to promote the industry and the Island as a sport fishing destination."
