Transportation and Public Works Recognizes Environmental Stewardship

Every year, the Department of Transportation and Public Works recognizes an Island contractor and a departmental employee who have demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting the environment while working on maintenance or construction projects. Nominations are put forward by Environmental Officers in the Department who have seen the work first hand. This week, Minister Ron MacKinley presented the 2009 Environmental Awards to John Raynor of Central Prince Contracting Limited and to Ken Hoy, Bridge Technician for the Department.

“These individuals have gone to great lengths to ensure sensitive eco-systems are protected during construction activities,” says Minister MacKinley. “As our Department does its work, it’s extremely important that we take the proper steps to avoid damage to the environment, especially in such a small province.”

Central Prince Contracting Limited owner John Raynor won the contractor award after work his company did to replace a bridge structure in West Cape. This project involved the creation of a plastic-lined stream diversion, allowing work to be completed in the dry from start to finish. The entire work crew was very accommodating in completing requests with respect to environmental controls. This site was visited by a number of provincial environment and federal fisheries personnel who commented on how well the environmental controls were installed and functioning throughout the project.

Ken Hoy was recognized for his work on a number of projects for the Department, but especially for his work during the aftermath of Hurricane Hannah. After that storm hit the Island, approximately 40 structures required various levels of attention, from minor repairs to total replacements. Mr. Hoy put in a tremendous effort to make the necessary arrangements including project coordination, traffic control and environmental permitting. These efforts ensured the repairs and replacements were completed in a timely manner.
