December 12, 2007 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]Contrary to recent reports in the media regarding the placement of Canada Post community mailboxes, the Prince Edward Island Department of Transportation and Public Works has not been involved in any approval process for the locations, or designs, of Canada Post community mailboxes within its jurisdiction, which includes all public roads outside Charlottetown and Summerside. Department policy states that the location of these mailboxes must be approved by the Traffic Operations Technician responsible for the given area and so far that has not happened. Meetings between the Department and Canada Post on the criteria that must be met in order for approval to be granted were initiated by the Department and held Monday, December 10. Included in that meeting were discussions on sight distances, design, snow removal and drainage requirements. The Department acknowledges that rural roadside mail delivery is an important service to many Island residents and will cooperate with Canada Post to ensure highway traffic operations and public safety is considered as these changes occur.Media Contact: Andrew Sprague
