May 7, 2009 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]Island drivers will soon see repairs made to fix damage done to Island roads over the winter. Late last week, the Provincial Department of Transportation and Public Works awarded tenders for hot asphalt supply to four Island companies. This will allow the Department to begin its road patching program immediately after the May long weekend. “Many of our roads need attention sooner rather than later,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “Having these tendered contracts awarded in early May puts the Department in a good position to get an early start on road repairs.” Patching operations are typically focussed on areas where moderate to severe damage has been done to roads over winter. The Department prioritizes its patching program based on the amount of traffic on a given road, which means arterial highways are usually done first, then secondary roads. “Island drivers have been extremely patient over the past few weeks and I want to thank them for that patience,” says Minister MacKinley. “At the same time, it’s very important that drivers use caution and slow down on roads where crews are working.”Media Contact: Andrew Sprague
