Transition Expo coming to Montague

* Education and Early Childhood Development [to May 2015]
Intermediate and high school students with disabilities and their families are encouraged to learn more about the options and opportunities available in Prince Edward Island, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.

“The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is proud to partner with the Eastern School District and the community to host another Transition Expo in eastern Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Currie. “Events such as this allow students with disabilities to learn more about options and opportunities available to them now and after high school.”

Transition Expo 2010 will take place on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at the Montague Regional High School between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The storm date is Tuesday, December 2, 2010. Information will be available in both English and French on a wide variety of topics including education and training, employment, and many other programs and services available throughout the community.

“The Transition Expo will provide valuable information that will help students with disabilities,” said Shelley Nelson, community access facilitator with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. “We work with students and their families to discuss options available to them now and after graduation. Our goal is to work together to develop a transition plan that will help students meet their personal and professional objectives after school.”

As many as 40 service providers and organizations from across the province will be on hand to present information to interested students and family members. Services include education and training, assistive technology, employment opportunities, financial assistance, life skills and day programs, recreational and leisure opportunities, residential options, respite care, transportation, and support organizations and advocacy.

“If you are wondering what options are available to you in your community, take the time to visit the Transition Expo or contact the resource specialists at your local school,” said Minister Currie. “Transition Expo 2010 in Montague will be a great opportunity to meet with representatives from government, private and not-for-profit agencies that support students with disabilities and their families.”
