Just off Highway #2 in Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island, there is a building that locals refer to as the old Co-op Store. In 1996, a fellow named Doug Deacon looked at that building and saw more than an old, run-down and deserted store. He saw potential, and he recognized it as part of the Island's heritage.
So, rather than deciding the building should be demolished, like many people would have, Doug decided to give the old Co-op store a new lease on life. And, in doing so, he has returned a piece of history to Mount Stewart and has created a very unique attraction.
What was formerly known — and to locals still is — as the old Co-op Store, was officially opened today as Trailside Café and Adventures. The name itself piques one's curiosity. The café part is self-explanatory, but what exactly does the adventure part of the title offer?
"The activities, or adventures, that Trailside offers to guests are peaceful and enjoyable activities that guests can do at their own pace, alone or as a group," said the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, on behalf of the Honourable Fred J. Mifflin, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "They are sure to be popular with visitors to the Island, many of whom are older couples who are looking for exactly this type of activity."
Guests can rent bicycles and explore nearby sections of the Confederation Trail, the town of Mount Stewart, or one of many little side roads that criss-cross the Island. For those who would rather spend their time on the water, canoes are also available and invite guests to explore the Hillsborough River and its tributaries. And, the Confederation Trail is an excellent spot for hikers and walkers of all ages.
In addition to the café and adventures that give it its name, Trailside also features local musical talent in the evenings. The music provides a homey backdrop to an evening meal, and gives diners an opportunity to tap their toes and sing along while they have after-dinner drinks.
"Trailside provides visitors with a true Island experience, and I'm confident it will be a very popular spot with Islanders and tourists alike," said the Honourable Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism.
The package offered by Trailside Café and Adventures only needed one more part to make it complete. Accommodations. Since opening last summer, one of the frequent requests Trailside staff have received is for accommodations. Recognizing an opportunity to enhance services and keep visitors in the area longer, Doug decided to turn the empty upstairs section of the building into four, three-star accommodation units for tourists.
"This project never would have gotten off the ground if I hadn't had support from a number of people and organizations," said Doug. "Teamwork and a good dose of determination brought it all together." Doug thanked his family, the community, the local credit union, the PEI Department of Economic Development and Tourism, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) for their involvement.
Teamwork and determination have protected a piece of Mount Stewart's heritage. The café, music and adventures are attracting visitors from both on and off the Island, and the new rooms will keep some of them around for a couple of days at a time.
Doug Deacon looked at an old building that was literally sinking into the ground, and gave it new life. He took a village eyesore and turned it into an attraction. Trailside Café and Adventures is open year round, with extended hours and services for the tourist season. Drop by and see a bit of Prince Edward Island's heritage in a friendly Island atmosphere.
