Islanders registered 13,287 wildlife conservation plates in 2015, generating $132,870 for the Wildlife Conservation Fund., says Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar.
“In 2015, the Wildlife Conservation Fund supported river restoration and watershed enhancement work, wildlife monitoring, educational programs and fish stocking, among many other projects. They carried out conservation work from one end of the province to the other,” said Minister Biggar. “I’m pleased that my department has been able to be part of raising funds for such a positive cause.”
Since 2013, Islanders have had the opportunity to support environmental work through the purchase of conservation license plates which come with a $10 surcharge for the Wildlife Conservation Fund.
In the last year, the red fox once again proved to be the most popular design.
Plate designs registered in 2015 were:
Red Fox – 5,516
Blue Jay – 2,762
Canada Goose – 1,706
Speckled Trout – 1,693
Lady Slipper – 1,610
The Wildlife Conservation Fund was created in 1998, and was originally supported by annual contributions from anglers, hunters and trappers. In 2013, the program expanded to include Conservation License Plates.
“This successful program gives the general public an opportunity to join in directly supporting wildlife conservation on P.E.I”, said Minister of Communities, Land and Environment Robert Mitchell. “The strong interest in these license plates shows that Islanders care about our wildlife and habitat. I commend those who pay into the fund, and all those groups working to enhance our Island environment.”
