A tender was called today for an upcoming shore protection project at Panmure Island following damage from a tidal surge last winter.

“Panmure Island is a special place whose natural beauty has long made it a desirable attraction in the Southern Kings area for locals and visitors,” said Premier Pat Binns. “By investing in shore protection at Panmure Island it is hoped that this work will help to preserve an important community asset for many years of enjoyment to come.”

The Panmure Island Shore Protection project follows considerable damage experienced during a tidal surge last winter. A significant area of shoreline was eroded, raising concerns with stability of the adjoining causeway. The scope of work involved in this tender includes sand excavation, shore enforcement through stone installation, and sand replacement as well as seeding of the area with native marrum grass. The approximate value of the project is $1.2 million.

“Stabilizing the shoreline will help protect the Panmure Island causeway as well as protect the unique natural environment of the area and preserve it as a tourism destination whose appeal is its natural beauty,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.

Following completion of the tender process, work on the project is slated to begin this fall and be completed by mid to late November.
