Technology PEI announced today two new initiatives which will bring increased technology capabilities to Island communities and to Island youth. These initiatives fall into the vision of Technology PEI in helping connect Island communities. The initiatives are focussed on Island youth in an attempt to attract them to Information Technology careers and give them the tools and the skills to use information technology in their communities.
Youth of the Digital Age focuses on the techniques involved in creating a Web page for junior and senior high school students. The project teaches Island students the tools and skills to learn while offering employment to youth for the duration of the project.
Youth of the Digital Age is led by the Morell Region Community Learning Centre and CAP site with support from Technology PEI. The project exposes Island students to new technologies and offers opportunities to look into possibilities for a future career in technology. For more information on this initiative, contact the Morell Region Community Learning Centre and CAP site at 902-961-2642 or through E-mail: mrclc@isn.net.
IT Generation , led by Digital Innovations in Tignish, will give youth the opportunity to become part of the digital era. Programs will be established in various communities across PEI. Participating communities will receive a grant to provide IT tools to young people. A provincial IT Generation Web site will be developed and a network of clubs will provide information to youth in all communities. For more information on the IT Generation program contact Digital Innovations at 902-882-2392 or through E-mail at jmokler@tigcap.peicaps.org.
Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology says it's important that community leadership be recognized in these initiatives . "The knowledge-based economy offers real benefits for Island youth to work and live in their home communities and through these two initiatives Island youth and Island communities will have increased opportunities."
Technology PEI is working with volunteer and community groups, in partnership with other governments, to ensure the infrastructure and services required to participate in the knowledge-based economy are accessible to all Islanders regardless of location.
