The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister responsible for Sport, today announced the Team PEI mission staff for the 2001 Canada Summer Games to be held in London, Ontario, August 11 - 25, 2001. The mission staff is responsible for all administrative duties for the teams representing Prince Edward Island at the 2001 Canada Games. The mission staff also facilitate communication between athletes and media and parents at home. Team PEI consists of 200 athletes, 45 team officials and 12 mission staff.
"It is my pleasure to announce the mission staff for the 2001 Canada Summer Games," says Minister Shea. "The mission staff represent a very important part of Team PEI as they bring the team together, act as ambassadors of PEI, assist in communications with families at home and assist both the athletes and coaches in performing at their best."
The 2001 mission staff is made up of both provincial government staff and community volunteers. The 2001 staff include: Ted Lawlor, Chef de Mission; Brian McFeely, Assistant Chef de Mission; John Morrison and François Caron, all representing the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
Volunteer appointments include: Lynn MacPhee, Gemma Keoughan, Susan Grady, David Campbell, Harvey Mazerolle, Harvey Enman, Kevin Quinn and Dawn Moase.
The selection of mission staff is a direct result of individual contributions to sport in the province at the community, provincial sport organization and school levels via administration, officiating and coaching. The 2001 mission staff bring with them a variety of sporting backgrounds and experiences which will be beneficial in supporting the athletes and coaches while at the games.
"I am pleased to see the high calibre of mission staff attending the 2001 Canada Games," says Chef de Mission Ted Lawlor. "It is certainly an honour to work with this qualified team as our job is a very important component in ensuring athletes and coaches enjoy their visit while competing at their best."
While in London, mission staff members will manage the Team PEI headquarters from 7 am to 2 am each day during the games. In addition to being responsible for all preparations prior to the games, they deal with issues that affect the teams while at the games including accommodations, transportation and scheduling. The Mission Staff also carry out liaison functions between Team PEI and parents, media and others, including incoming phone calls and faxes for Island athletes.
The 2001 Canada Winter Games will be televised on TSN.
