Honourable Chester Gillan, Minister responsible for Sport, today announced the Team PEI mission staff for the 1999 Canada Winter Games to be held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, February 20 to March 2, 1999. The mission staff is responsible for all administrative duties for the 17 teams that will represent Prince Edward Island at the 1999 Canada Games.
"I would like to commend the mission staff for their dedication to sport in our province," said Minister Gillan. "To be a member of Team PEI is an experience of a lifetime and I am confident they will be excellent ambassadors of our province."
The 1999 Canada Games mission staff includes: Chef de Mission, Dave MacNeill, Brenda Beaton, Peter Bolo, Lisa MacKay, Linda Durling, Lynn MacInnis, Gordon Whitlock, Ted Lawlor, John Morrison, Brian McFeely and Cletus Dunn.
Dave MacNeill, a well-known coach and sports enthusiast, is the first volunteer to hold the position of Canada Games Chef de Mission for PEI. He will lead a contingent of 215 Island athletes, coaches and staff to Newfoundland. "I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to work with these excellent athletes and team officials," said MacNeill.
While in Corner Brook, mission staff members will manage the Team PEI headquarters each day during the games. In addition to being responsible for all preparations prior to the games, they also carry out liaison functions between Team PEI and parents, media and others, including incoming phone calls and faxes for Island athletes.
The 1999 Canada Winter Games will be televised on TSN.
