Studio Tour Draws Large Crowd

Island craft producers were thrilled at the large turnout at this year's annual Prince Edward Island Studio Tour Weekend. Now in its fourth year, this popular promotion was an excellent opportunity for craftspeople to share and demonstrate their talent with others. Although the numbers are not yet in, participants are suggesting it has been the most successful Studio Tour Weekend to date.

"There seemed to be more visitors through the door this year than in previous years," said Ed McKenna of St. Peters Bay Craft & Giftware. "The off-Island traffic was very noticeable this year, as many visitors from other provinces came over to take part in the Tour."

Many sites around the province had artisans hosting demonstrations throughout the weekend. Whether you saw an artisan turning a wooden bowl, hooking a rug, or teaching a lesson on the weaver's loom, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

"The Studio Tour was a welcoming chance for Islanders to see first-hand what the talented craftspeople from our province are producing," said Michael F. Currie, Minister of the Department of Development and Technology. "I enjoyed getting out and visiting various places during the weekend of the Studio Tour. Not only was it entertaining, I was able to see and purchase some of the finest handcrafts being made in PEI."

This year the Art & Craft Directory was distributed all summer long, allowing visitors to find their way to Island gift shops, galleries and museums throughout the summer.

"A gallery owner found me through the booklet this summer and has since placed a large order for his gallery in Ontario," said Kerras Jefferey of Back Road Folk Art. "Actually, three other galleries that I currently do business with all found me by looking through the booklet."

The Studio Tour is an initiative by Prince Edward Island Business Development to support and promote the vibrant craft and giftware industry in the province.
