STUDENTS’ SMILES PAY FOR OUTDOOR CLASSROOM - Province donates $2,500 to Parkdale Elementary School playground

Premier's Office
Grade 1 students at Parkdale Elementary School in Charlottetown have secured a major donation for their school playground with their smiling faces. Premier Pat Binns and Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry Jamie Ballem recently visited the Grade 1 classroom to present the students with a cheque for $2,500 to pay for the school’s outdoor classroom.

The donation was to thank the school and Grade 1 students who were featured in the television commercial for the PEI Energy Savings Bonds. The commercial was filmed in Mary Jane MacDonald’s Grade 1 classroom. The Parkdale class was asked to participate because one of the students, Liam MacDonald, was chosen through a random draw to receive the first PEI Energy Savings Bond.

“PEI Energy Savings Bonds are about investing in the future. They allow Islanders to invest in their own future and a green energy future for Prince Edward Island. These Grade 1 students were the perfect group to help tell that story,” said Premier Binns.

“We wanted to do something to thank the students and the school for their co-operation and paying for the outdoor classroom seemed a natural fit,” added Minister Ballem.

The PEI Energy Savings Bond program was created to give Islanders an opportunity to invest in the Eastern Kings Wind Farm. The 30-megawatt facility generates enough electricity to power 12,000 homes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75,000 tonnes annually. Islanders have invested more than $5 million in PEI Energy Savings Bonds since the program was launched in December.
