Education Minister Mildred Dover advised today that the first day of class for students in grades 1 to 12 is Tuesday, September 5. Classes begin at UPEI and Holland College on Wednesday, September 6.
Minister Dover advised that while going back to school is exciting for students, it can also be a an anxious time, especially for families of young children who are leaving home, riding the bus and going to school for the first time. “By offering support and encouragement, employers and friends can help to ease the pressure and make the first days of school a positive experience for everyone,” she said.
Enrolment in grades 1 to 12 is expected to be approximately 21,500 students, about three per cent less than last year. Approximately 1,400 students will begin kindergarten. Children are now required to be five years old by September 30 to enter kindergarten, and six years old by October 31 to enter grade 1.
Approximately 3,900 full- and part-time students are expected to attend UPEI and another 2,400 students will attend full-time programs at Holland College.
