The Department of Transportation and Public Works today issued a preliminary update on road damage that has occurred as a result of this week's storm.
"Our staff have completed the initial review and assessment of damage from this week's storm," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea. "Our preliminary assessment has identified a number of sites which will require repair work," Shea said.
Most serious of these was a section of road on Route 16 at Rock Barra in Kings County. Other sites across the province were identified as requiring repairs but the Rock Barra site is the only section of roadway that will be closed to traffic on an interim basis at this time. Preliminary cost estimates place the scope of repair work to be done province wide to be in the vicinity of $1 M. Staff from the Department of Transportation and Public Works will be continuing to investigate further possible storm damage to roadways over the next few weeks.
"It takes time to get a full picture of the impact that storms of this nature can create. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the travelling public for their continued cooperation. I'd also like to express my appreciation for the efforts of our staff to keep our roads safe," said Shea.
