A steering committee comprised of eight people has been appointed by the Hon. Chester Gillan, Minister responsible for Culture, to carry out a six month assessment on the existing delivery system of cultural programs and services in Prince Edward Island.
The committee, which is chaired by Dr. C.W.J. Eliot of Charlottetown, will focus on determining the strengths and weaknesses of current program and service delivery. In addition, the steering committee will explore issues such as Provincial Cultural Policy, legislation and ways to further improve system effectiveness, in an effort to ensure appropriate and relevant cultural programs are available to the people of Prince Edward Island.
"I am confident the Ministerial Steering Committee on Culture will present practical, workable recommendations in their report," stated Minister Gillan.
"The representatives of this committee have contributed significantly to Prince Edward Island's culture and heritage over the years. They are dedicated to preserving the culture of our province and they are eager to work towards improvements in this area."
Other members of the steering committee include: Dr. Tom Hall, Summerside; Mary Crane, Kensington; Sylvie Toupin, Wellington; Dr. Najmul Chisti, Charlottetown; Hilda Woolnough, Breadalbane; Scott MacAulay, Summerside; and Carol Nicholson, Montague.
A final report including recommendations for cultural program and service delivery will be submitted to Minister Gillan in January 1998. An interim report is expected in October 1997.
