Statement by Premier Robert Ghiz on the Quebec election

On behalf of the Government of Prince Edward Island, I would like to congratulate Madame Marois for her victory in Quebec’s provincial election.

Further, I would like to congratulate Jean Charest on his dedication to public service – both in Quebec and across Canada. Premier Charest’s deep interest in the Island for several decades has always been greatly appreciated. His leadership at both the federal and provincial levels has always been a tremendous inspiration to Canadians. Over the years, Premier Charest has visited the Island many times – and I have personally learned from both his counsel and his experience.

Traditionally, the Island and the Province of Quebec have enjoyed a very strong relationship. Both provinces place the well-being of its citizens as their first priority – and those common interests will continue to forge a strong bond.

Finally, all Islanders were deeply saddened by the unfortunate outburst of violence at the conclusion of the election. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families.
