I am saddened by the decision announced today that the PEI Senators Hockey Club will be ceasing operations in Charlottetown at the end of this season.
Over the past three years, the PEI Senators have brought high-calibre, professional hockey and other benefits to the province. Fans from across the Island appreciated the energy players put into each game at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Fans were extremely proud when the team won two division championships.
A lot of energy was also exhibited off the ice. Many people spent countless hours behind the scenes working to bring the Senators to Prince Edward Island and then continued working to help make the club successful each season. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the club’s president Ray Murphy and other shareholders including Dr. Ian Moore, Rod MacNeill, Shane Turner, Bill Stavert, Carl Livingston, Kevin Murphy, Mark Ledwell and Earl MacDonald.
I would also like to recognize the front office staff and the Booster Club members, especially Nalda Wheeler, for their dedication to building support for the PEI Senators, as well as the corporate sponsors who have contributed to the organization over the past few years. In addition, the Charlottetown Civic Centre staff have worked very hard to ensure that the needs of both the players and fans were satisfied for each game.
On behalf of the Province of Prince Edward Island, I would like to extend my best wishes to the players, staff and their families.
