September 29, 2000 Honourable Gilbert R. Clements expressed sympathy today on the passing of the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Canada has lost a great Canadian and I want to join the many people across our country in expressing my condolences to his family at this time of loss, especially so soon after the tragic death of his son Michel. My association with Mr. Trudeau over the years has made me aware of his great desire to ensure that we continue as Canadians to be proud of belonging united, as residents of the greatest country in the world. His independent and decisive personality created a love-hate relationship but we cannot forget his contribution to Canada. Among his greatest accomplishments will always be the patriation of the Constitution and our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As Canadians we are all poorer because of his passing.Media Contact: Island Information Service
