Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology is pleased to announce a newly launched project called "Revision of They Chose to Serve" supported by Technology PEI’s Community Innovation Fund. The project is being carried out by the St. Peter’s Bay CAP Site.
The St. Peter’s Bay project involves the revamping of the original 1987 book, “They Chose to Serve.” The newly revised content will be available on-line after the completion of the project.
“The CAP sites established across the Province have the resources and necessary tools to take on projects like this one,” said Minister Currie. “This type of project allows the community to preserve an important part of history and to honor those who chose to serve from the St. Peter’s area. The individuals involved in this particular project will be able to do all the work for this book from the comforts of their local CAP site and learn valuable IT skills along the way.”
The project will chronicle the veterans of St. Peter’s with pictures, letters, and personal information on each veteran.
“Since 2005 was the ‘Year of the Veteran,’ our CAP site decided to dedicate a web page to the young men and women of St. Peter's and area who went to war to serve for our country,” said Lorna Whitty, treasurer of St. Peter’s Bay CAP Site. “In terms of population, St. Peter's is believed to have had one of the highest enlistments and sadly one of the highest casualty rate of any place in Canada. These wars included WWI, WWII and the Korean war.”
CAP Sites and “not for profit” organizations across Prince Edward Island are eligible to participate in the Community Innovation Fund. The fund is designed to support initiatives that enhance existing services or to develop services which benefit people and communities. An important goal of this program is to encourage partnerships among community groups, businesses, and agencies.
