Spring Weight Restrictions to Begin Early Thursday Morning

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
The Provincial Department of Transportation and Public Works will implement spring weight restrictions on Island roads beginning at 12:01 a.m., Thursday, March 12. The restrictions are being put in place because warmer weather is expected over the coming days and weeks, and Island roads will be vulnerable under heavy loads.

“These measures are put in place to help preserve the integrity of our road network,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “From the time the frost starts to thaw, until the roads dry out later in the spring, Island highways are very susceptible to damage. These restrictions help reduce that damage.”

During spring weight restrictions heavy trucks are restricted to seventy-five percent of their maximum allowable axle weight when travelling outside the province’s all-weather highway network. Also, tolerances will not be permitted for overweight loads on any Island road. A full list of all roads in the all-weather network will be printed in Island newspapers on Wednesday.
