Spring Cleanup Approaching

The Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) wishes to remind Islanders that the 2009 Spring Cleanup will commence starting May 4.

“The annual Spring Cleanup Period is a time where residents can dispose of items that otherwise wouldn’t be picked up during regular household collections,” said Gerry Moore, CEO of Island Waste Management Corporation. ”This includes items like metals and excess yard and garden waste.”

The three-week period will see the collection of compost, metal, and waste items from households across the province. The schedule for the Spring Cleanup period by region is as follows:

Week 1 (Starting May 4) - Metal (all households)

Week 2 (Starting May 11) - Compost (Eastern, Central, East Prince) and Waste (Capital, West Prince)

Week 3 (Starting May 18) - Waste (Eastern, Central, East Prince) and Compost (Capital, West Prince)

Some helpful hints for customers preparing for the Spring Cleanup period include:

• Spring Cleanup items must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on the Monday of each collection week. This will help to ensure items are not missed as contractors complete their collection routes.

• Sort your materials for Spring Cleanup according to the designated week in your household calendar. Only put out waste items during Waste Week, compost items during Compost week and metal items during Metals Week.

• Multiple items like broken tree branches need to be bundled and tied at curbside. This prevents them from being blown around in the wind and makes collection by contractors easier.

• Bundled items should be less than 4 feet in length, height and width and weigh no more than 75 pounds. This is to help prevent risk of injury for the customer and the contractor.

Moore also noted that the use of plastic bags for yard debris will be accepted during this years spring clean up but will be eliminated for the fall clean up in November 2009. For the fall clean up yard debris should be placed in Paper Yard Debris Bags. Moore advised that customers unsure of their collection region can check the schedules in their residential collection calendar, contact the IWMC Customer Service Centre at 1-888-280-8111, or online at www.iwmc.pe.ca.
