August 13, 2001 * Community and Cultural Affairs [to Jun 2007]The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister Responsible for Sport, has expressed sorrow in learning of the recent death of Orin Carver. "Mr Carver made a major contribution to sport on PEI both through his active involvement in many aspects of hockey and through his general interest in the importance of sport for youth. His leadership as the chief executive officer and president of the 1991 Canada Winter Games which were held in Prince Edward Island proved that Islanders shared his belief, and the success of the games is a testimony to his ability to inspire others." Minister Shea is currently attending the Canada Summer Games in London Ontario. Many of the mission staff and coaches in the PEI delegation to the games had worked with Orin Carver in connection with the 1991 Games and spoke of his involvement and dedication on behalf of young athletes. The Orin Carver Scholarship was established at the conclusion of the 1991 Games as a legacy of the event. It is awarded annually to a student from PEI who has had high achievement in sport and culture. The funeral for Mr Carver was held on Monday in Charlottetown. Media Contact: Jennifer Cormier
