Sixth Annual Premier’s Award for Diversity Leadership Presented to the Provincial Library Service

Premier's Office
The PEI Human Rights Commission and the PEI Public Service Commission held a ceremony on December 10, at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, to mark the 59th Anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to present Annual Premier’s Award for Diversity Leadership.

Premier Robert Ghiz attended the event and recognized the work of provincial government employees who have demonstrated leadership in diversity by creating a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive workplace. By presenting this year’s award to Kathleen Eaton, representing the Provincial Library Service, Premier Ghiz mentioned that diversity is a vital factor in the growth of our population, economic opportunities, and in enhancing our cultural mosaic. Commitment to diversity is essential said Premier Ghiz, as we work toward implementing social and economic development programs to address our future challenges. Premier Ghiz also spoke on the Island’s rich cultural diversity.

The award was created when the PEI Government adopted the Diversity and Equity policy in 2002. This policy is designed to support an innovative and inclusive workforce which, at all levels, is representative of the diverse population it serves. The policy recognizes “diversity of individuals” as a basic human right and makes use of the full range of talents and perspectives available to the business of government.

Jim Ferguson, CEO of the PEI Public Service Commission, took the opportunity to recognize dedicated employees and the PEI Diversity Advisory Committee. Basil Haire, Chair, Public Service Commission Board, launched the 2008 Diversity Calendar. The calendar has been produced to honour the growth of diversity in today’s public sector workplace. Richard Montigny, Chair of the Human Rights Commission Board, spoke on Human Rights Day and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 to affirm the fundamental freedoms and human rights of all people.
