June 21, 1999 * Education [to Apr 2008]The Government of Prince Edward Island's four-year Capital Construction Plan for Schools is currently on time and on budget said Minister of Education Chester Gillan. In early 1998, Government worked in consultation with the school boards to identify a substantial list of Island schools which needed to be replaced or renovated. Through that partnership process, Summerside Intermediate School (S.I.S.) was identified as requiring $2.5 million in renovations. In March 1998, when Government announced the list of schools to be renovated or replaced, the school boards supported the $35 million Capital Construction Plan. "The Western School Board specifically requested $2.5 million for S.I.S. which would be used for renovations and some expansions of the facility," said Minister Gillan. "In an attempt to fairly address the needs of each school, Government allocated $2.5 million for S.I.S. " Minister Gillan, Deputy Minister of Education Elaine Noonan and other department officials have met with representatives of the School Council and the Western School Board to discuss the S.I.S. renovation project. "We are very open to the idea of sitting down with the School Council and the Board to further discuss plans for S.I.S. and to determine how the dollars can be spent most effectively."Media Contact: Ellen Hamill
