The Silver Fox Inn of Summerside has been awarded the first five star rating for accommodations in the western region of Prince Edward Island. The Inn, purchased by Penny and Rod Herbert in September of 1999, now joins seven properties which offer “luxurious accommodation, guest services and amenities, at a world-class standard” as outlined in the Canada Select five-star requirements.
Built in 1890, The Silver Fox Inn is considered an excellent example of the Queen Anne revival style and was originally designed by renowned architect W.C. Harris. The Bed and Breakfast is located in Summerside’s Heritage district and is one of the featured properties on the city’s self-guided walking tour.
“I am very pleased to welcome the Silver Fox Inn to the prestigious group of five-star accommodations for Prince Edward Island,” said Philip Brown, Minister of Tourism. “The Herberts have created a wonderful atmosphere in this stunning inn demonstrating their commitment to quality of service and exceptional experience for the traveller.” The Canada Select Accommodation Rating Program assesses accommodations within six categories - each with their own unique criteria. Only a handful of bed and breakfast properties across Canada, and six in PEI, have received the distinction of a five-star rating.
John Cudmore, Chair of Canada/Camping Select on Prince Edward Island noted, “I’d like to congratulate the Herberts on the five-star rating for the Silver Fox Inn. This award not only increases the profile of the Inn itself but also the entire Island as a world class vacation destination.”
The Canada and Camping Select Rating Programs are delivered in nine provinces and one territory, assessing more than 200,000 accommodation units and camping sites nationwide. The rating program assists the travelling public in choosing accommodation which meet their needs and expectations. In Prince Edward Island, 85 percent of properties and 90 percent of units/sites are rated using the Canada and Camping Select programs.
