The Province has initiated a review of signage policy on Prince Edward Island. Tourism Minister Greg Deighan announced today that a Signage Policy Review Committee has been established to review provincial policies respecting commercial signage.
Mr. Deighan noted that it has been over 25 years since the current policies and programs for commercial signage were put in place. "A great deal has changed since these policies were first established. Over the past number of years, substantial development has occurred on the Island and as a result it is timely that a review of signage policies be undertaken," said Mr. Deighan.
Minister Deighan explained that a committee comprised of representatives from government, the private sector, the tourism industry and Island municipalities has been established to review the Province's signage policy and to make recommendations on future direction. The Committee is chaired by Mr. Larry Wright, retired principal of Three Oaks High School in Summerside.
"The Committee has been mandated to obtain public input and to review all aspects of commercial signage policy," said Mr. Deighan. "When the current policy was established in the early 1970's, it was very innovative and has served the Province well in terms of protecting the Island's landscape. In shaping future policy, I believe that it is important that we not lose sight of this primary objective."
The Minister explained that the Committee will be soliciting submissions from key interest groups and the general public over the next few months. The Committee is expected to submit their findings to the Minister this spring.
