Series of booklets launched -- Putting Your Affairs in Order at any Age

* Community Services and Seniors [to May 2015]
A new series of booklets designed to help Island seniors was launched today by The Community Legal Information Association of PEI (CLIA). The series, called “Putting Your Affairs in Order at any Age,” features nine booklets with information on health, financial and legal affairs, and other concerns.

“We receive calls every day from people dealing with difficult legal issues,” said Donna Langille, Executive Director of CLIA. “Issues affecting seniors can arise out of a lack of understanding of the law and where to get help. This series is designed to help each of us prepare for a time when we may be unable to make or communicate decisions for ourselves.”

The new series of booklets deals with a number of important issues for seniors, their families and caregivers. The topics include: preventing abuse and neglect of older adults; new relationships: legal and safety concerns; you and your grandchildren; and moving to a nursing home or community care facility. New and revised booklets on wills, powers of attorney and health care decisions are also part of this series. CLIA also has a video called, “Putting Your Affairs in Order,” available on DVD or on their website.

The project, Abuse of Older Adults and the Law: What Islanders Need to Know, is a partnership with the PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation, Seniors Safety Program and UPEI Centre on Health and Aging. Funding was provided by the New Horizons for Seniors Program of HRSD Canada.

Over the next few months CLIA staff will be available to seniors, caregivers and service providers to make presentations about any of the topics covered by this series.

All nine publications are available in French and English on the CLIA website at www.cliapei.ca or by calling 902-892-0853 or 1-800-240-9798.
