Minister of Education, Honourable Jeffrey E. Lantz, said it's important for Islanders to recognize September 8 as International Literacy Day, a day that reminds the world of the value of literacy in our everyday lives.
"As a community, and as a province, we are certainly aware of the impact low level literacy skills have on individuals, families, health and the economy," said Minister Lantz. "By working together through partnerships in the community, private and public sectors, we are able to realize goals and effect change. This is certainly the case when it comes to improving the literacy levels of Islanders."
The Department of Education's Literacy Initiatives Secretariat continues to partner with the many community-based literacy organizations in Prince Edward Island. The department's literacy strategy calls for learning opportunities for all adult Islanders.
Barbara Macnutt, manager of the Literacy Initiatives Secretariat, said literacy groups work year-round to improve the literacy levels of Islanders.
"As a group we are working towards common goals," said Ms. Macnutt. "The message we are spreading is that there is help available for individuals who want to read better. Part of our public awareness and outreach campaign is 'Want to Read Better? 1-800-348-7323.' This message will be appearing across PEI in a variety of forms."
A recent joint project of literacy organizations was a first-time entry in the Gold Cup & Saucer Parade. Other initiatives include a bumper sticker blitz with the "Want to Read Better?" message.
Seaman's Beverages is proud to be participating in the literacy campaign. Seaman's delivery trucks will carry the "Want to Read Better?" message across the Island through the month of September.
"By pooling resources and ideas, community literacy organizations and businesses are able to get their message out more often and more effectively," said Minister Lantz. "It is important to reflect on our efforts to improve literacy levels among Islanders on International Literacy Day and every day of the year."
