The construction of new roundabouts at two major highway intersections will result in improved safety and efficiency for Island drivers, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey.
“Over the past number of years, Islanders have come to appreciate the improved safety roundabouts can provide,” said Minister Vessey. “The construction of new roundabouts at Pooles Corner, and on Route 2 at the entrance to Slemon Park, will slow traffic and reduce the severity of collisions at these busy intersections.”
The approximate value of the road construction tenders announced today is $5.6 million. In total, the province plans to invest approximately $38 million in road and bridge construction this year, as outlined in the 2012-2013 Capital Budget.
Other projects included in this round of tenders include:
• Full reconstruction of 800 metres on Route 4 in Murray River
• Resurfacing of 2.2 kilometres on Route 2 in Brookfield/Greenvale
• Resurfacing of 2.5 kilometres on Route 2 in Travellers Rest
• Resurfacing of 1.3 kilometres on Route 2 (Malpeque Road) in Charlottetown
• Resurfacing of 1 kilometre on Route 1A in Ross Corner
The Slemon Park and Route 2 Travellers Rest projects have received funding through the Canada - Prince Edward Island New Deal for Cities and Communities - Community Fund which is managed by the Prince Edward Island Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.
“As we get closer to construction season, the province will announce more projects for completion in 2012,” said Minister Vessey. “I’m confident the work that will be completed this year will go a long way toward improving safety for all Island drivers.”
