Science Fair Participants to Represent PEI at Canada-Wide Fair

School, district and provincial science fairs are excellent opportunities for students to showcase their talents. These fairs also encourage participants to continue learning and enjoying science, said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.

“I was able to visit the provincial fair this year and I was very impressed with how well the students used the scientific process to demonstrate their science knowledge and skills,” said Minister Currie. “The projects were extremely creative, topical and well presented. Congratulations to everyone who participated at all levels. I am sure that those representing Prince Edward Island in Peterborough this weekend will make a lasting impression with the judges at the Canada-Wide Science Fair.”

The students who are going on to represent Prince Edward Island at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Peterborough on Saturday, May 15, are Ashley Maclean of Westisle Composite High, PEI Potatoes: Sweet!; Emily Pass of Stonepark Intermediate, The Acid Test; Arielle VanIderstine of Stonepark Intermediate, Seeing Sound; Sam Vail of Immanuel Christian, Windpower; and Samantha Lawther of Francois-Buote, La température et la hauteur des balles de squash.

Other senior and intermediate winners were Emma Trivett of Charlottetown Rural High, Drug Interaction with P-glycoprotein and Daniel Larsen of Immanuel Christian School, A More Efficient Transformer.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Award was presented to Arielle VanIderstine of Stonepark Intermediate School who best demonstrated excellence and innovation in scientific thought and skill through her project, Seeing Sound.

Projects that received honourable mention in the Intermediate Division were done by Ellen Ross, East Wiltshire Intermediate; Laura Whelan, Stonepark Intermediate; Breanna Ching, Souris Consolidated; Calab Jarvis and Anthony Kamphius, Birchwood Intermediate; Isra Munir, Stonepark Intermediate; Nathan Profit, M.E. Callaghan Intermediate; Marie Charles, Francois-Buote; Chelsea Walker, Hernewood Junior High; Janelle Langin and Kierra Arsenault, Summerside Intermediate; and Noah Richardson, Summerside Intermediate.

Minister Currie acknowledged the great collaboration that occurs between UPEI faculty staff and the education system to make the provincial fair possible. In attendance today were Dr. Bill Whelan (chair), Dr. Barry Linkletter, Dr. Andrew Trivett, Lisa Steele, Whitney Kelly-Clark, Chris Vessey, Dr. Reina Lamothe and Dr. John Burka of UPEI, as well as educators and volunteers Paul Stewart, Lise Deveau and Janice Murphy.

The top ten projects (in no order) in Grade 4 were done by Kiley Kitts, Athena Consolidated; Sydney Wheatley and Hannah Peters, Eliot River Elementary; Carson Savidant, Parkdale Elementary; Carly Enman, Athena Consolidated; Lise Charles, Francois-Buote; Abraham Taha, Athena Consolidated; Jack Digout, L.M. Montgomery Elementary; Allison Dempsey, L.M. Montgomery Elementary; Tyler Johnston, Prince Street Elementary; and Bella Swyer, West Kent Elementary.

The top ten projects in Grade 5 were done by Lauren Rogerson and Madelyn Crawford, Eliot River Elementary; Hannah Maclellan, Glen Stewart Elementary; Cameron Pollard and Ben Mackenzie, Southern Kings Consolidated; Lauren Gaudet, West Royalty Elementary; Thomas Wagner, West Royalty Elementary; Graham Ching, Souris Consolidated; Riley MacKay, Spring Park Elementary; Lauren Guo, West Kent Elementary; Jun Park and Eric Kim, West Royalty Elementary; and Connor Nabuurs, Glen Stewart Elementary.

The top ten projects in Grade 6 were done by Graeme Zinck, West Kent Elementary; Hunter Boudreau, L.M. Montgomery Elementary; Kennedy Crossland, Athena Consolidated; Monique Visser, Immanuel Christian; Melissa Lewis, West Royalty Elementary; Petra Larsen, Immanuel Christian; Sophie Hale, Spring Park Elementary; Drew Murphy, Alberton Elementary; Gracyn Clow, Central Queens Elementary; and Bobby Jamieson, Prince Street Elementary.

The creators of these projects received a personalized certificate and a $25 cheque.
