School counsellors have an impact on student success

Education, Early Learning and Culture
Prince Edward Island school counsellors have a tremendous impact on student success and career planning, says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie.

“School counsellors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents to ensure students are prepared to reach their potential,” said Minister Currie. “As a former school counselor, I recognize the essential role they play in working with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world.”

Canadian School Counselling Week, sponsored by the School Counsellors Chapter of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), will be celebrated from February 1-5, 2015.

School counsellors focus on positive ways to enhance students’ personal, social, educational and career development, while working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential.

“Professional school counsellors are certified, experienced educators who respond to an ever increasing variety of student needs,” said Westisle Composite High School school counselor Amy McFeely. “School counsellors are an integral part of the school community, helping students with personal challenges, academic issues, and career development.”
