School Boards to Elect Trustees

Nominations for candidates to offer for election as trustees for the Eastern School District, Western School Board and the French Language School Board are now being accepted.

A total of 29 trustees will be elected to the three School District/Boards during School Board Trustee elections to be held on May 30, 2005. The date of the election was announced on March 9, 2005, by the Honourable Mildred Dover, Minister of Education.

Lowell Croken, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer for Prince Edward Island, announced the call for nominations of candidates today. Official nomination papers are available from the Zone Returning Officers in each of the electoral zones in each school district/board as well as at Access PEI locations. A list of the Returning Officers for the school trustee elections was published in the daily newspapers of the province today. Nominations will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2005.

The breakdown of the 29 trustee positions to be filled by the election process are as follows:

The Eastern School District contains eleven electoral zones and one trustee will be elected in each zone.

The Western School Board contains nine electoral zones and one trustee will be elected in each zone.

The French Language School Board contains a total of six electoral zones across the province and will elect a total of nine trustees to the Board: three from zone 1 (the Évangéline Region); one each from zone 2 (West Prince), zone 3 (East Prince), and zone 4 (North Shore), and two from zone 5 (Queens County to Eastern Prince Edward Island) and one from zone six (Souris area).

Under the Elections PEI website at www.electionspei.ca electors can find the Address Locator which enables and assists every elector to determine his or her correct school zone in which he or she resides and votes for the May 30, 2005 election. Assistance will also be available from the Zone Returning Officers, Elections PEI Office, the PEI Home and School Association and schools.

Information concerning nominations, eligibility of proposed trustees and nomination papers are available from the Zone Returning Officer in each electoral zone.

In the next few days a School Trustee Brochure and a School Election Information Booklet will be distributed through all the Island schools with a copy to be sent home with each child. The brochure lists information on nominations, eligibility of proposed trustees and eligibility of electors and the booklet lists contact information on the Zone Returning Officer, election information, voting locations as well as school zone maps and descriptions.
