Although the Royal Winter Fair did not bring the financial success of a year ago for George Dixon of Clyde River, when he received a price of $50 per pound for his market lamb, this Royal Fair brought him recognition that will outlast the former financial success.
George Dixon, Clyde River, was honoured with a presentation at the conclusion of the sheep classes at the 80th Royal Winter Fair when he received the Peter Levine Achievement Trophy exemplifying all around ability, sportsmanship and dedication necessary to be respected by his or her fellow exhibitors and breeders. The trophy was presented to Dixon by the Levine family in honour of the late Peter Levine.
The trophy is presented to an active showman who is a dedicated supporter of breed activities and may represent any sheep breed. Dixon is a regular exhibitor at the Royal in various sections of the sheep classes, in both breeding and market lambs, and has raised a number of animals that have done consistently well.
The National Shorthorn Show was held as part of the 80th Royal Winter Fair. Prince Edward Island was represented with entries from Marvin Peters, Springfield. Classes were well filled and competition was keen.
A large ringside watched Peters place sixth with his two year old bull CLOVERDALE PRETTY BOY, where he also took a sixth with his yearling heifer CLOVERDALE COWGIRL NANCY.
In the Hereford Show, where large strong classes are a given, DMR Herefords owned by David Ross of Montague, placed eighth with GROSVENOR HONEY 1G 125M in one of the split classes of Heifer calves born January 1-March 31, 2002.
KIMBROOK JUSTA WEE GAL 1M placed sixth for Ernest Pippy of Hazelbrook in another of the split classes of Hereford heifer calves born January 1-March 31, 2002.
The Scotiabank Hays Classic Junior Dairy Show was a thrill for Prince Edward Island dairy team members. They watched as a number of their fellow team members were chosen finalists and went on to garner good standings.
SHOWMANSHIP:
Whitney Bysterveldt of Bedford placed sixth in the Junior Showmanship in a class of ninety-five entries.
