Roundabout to improve safety at Charlottetown Airport intersection

A new roundabout will improve public safety at a busy intersection and allow for safer access to the Charlottetown Airport, thanks to a funding partnership between the Province of Prince Edward Island, the City of Charlottetown and the Charlottetown Airport.

“Our government is committed to making roads safer for Islanders and the travelling public,” said Robert Vessey, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. “This roundabout will also improve access to the Charlottetown Airport, which is a major trade and tourism gateway to our province.”

The roundabout will be constructed at the Brackley Point Road-Sherwood Road-Charlottetown Airport intersection. The $1.5 million project will be shared three ways among the funding partners. Design work is underway. Construction will begin spring 2013.

“The City of Charlottetown is pleased to work cooperatively with the Province of Prince Edward Island and the Airport Authority to ensure that this much-needed improvement to our infrastructure system is completed as soon as possible,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “This is a classic example of partnering with others in our community and I want to recognize and thank Minister Robert Vessey and Doug Newson for their leadership roles in ensuring this infrastructure improvement is completed. Obviously, one of the benefits to the City is that we will only be responsible for one-third of the capital costs.”

Nearly 300,000 passengers travel through the Charlottetown Airport each year for business and pleasure.

“Charlottetown Airport Authority is delighted to be joining two great airport partners in making this project a reality,” said Doug Newson, CEO of the authority. “We have invested millions of dollars in our infrastructure in the past two years to keep it modern and up to date and we see this project as an essential piece of the airport’s commitment to provide a safe and convenient experience for our passengers, tenants and guests.”
