Roadside Clean Up In 25th Year

* Fisheries and Environment [to Jul 1998]
Minister of Fisheries and Environment, the Honourable Kevin J. MacAdam, today praised the PEI Women's Institute for their quarter century of service to PEI citizens in organizing the twenty fifth annual Roadside Clean Up. "Thousands of Islanders have grown up with a better appreciation of our Island environment because they participated in the Roadside Clean Up," said Mr. MacAdam.

"We all appreciate the Island for what it provides to each of us in terms of pleasure and economic benefits. In return we need to respect and protect our valuable Island resources - clean air, clean water, beautiful beaches, and clean roadsides," said Mr. MacAdam. "Be Island proud - Keep it clean" is again the theme for the Clean Up providing a goal for the Women's Institute and the hundreds of volunteers who will join in the Clean Up this Saturday, May 9.

The Prince Edward Island Government has been associated with the Clean Up since it started 25 years ago. The Minister indicated how pleased he was to see that Islanders still continue to respond so favourably to the Roadside Clean Up Campaign. The Minister emphasized that stewardship of our Island's environment is the responsibility of everyone in Prince Edward Island. "The public commitment by all Islanders to this ideal is an important step forward in the ongoing protection of the environment," he noted. Mr. MacAdam applauded the Women's Institute for their continuing efforts to make Islanders more aware of the benefits of a clean environment.

"The Women's Institute continues to lead the way and I encourage Islanders to take up their challenge and be "Island Proud" and participate in the Clean Up on May 9," said Mr. MacAdam.

Free Clean Up bags are available at all Regional Services Centres and from participating Shell Service Stations.
