Road users advised to prepare for spring weight restrictions and thawing roads

Milder weather is expected over the coming days and weeks and that means Islanders who transport goods should be prepared for spring weight restrictions, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey.

“Weight restrictions are necessary to reduce the amount of damage done to Island roads once they begin to thaw,” said Minister Vessey. “Companies that transport heavy loads should be aware that weight restrictions could be put in place at any time; therefore, they should try to move heavy loads as soon as possible.”

The department will notify local media and stakeholders a few days in advance of the restrictions, but the need can come very quickly depending on the weather. Overweight permits will not be issued by the Department during spring weight restrictions. Last year the restrictions came into effect on March 7 and remained in place until early May.

Other road users are advised that spring weather can present a whole new set of driving challenges; therefore drivers are reminded to pay attention and drive safely.

“In the spring, when the road starts to thaw, Island drivers must be careful to avoid damaging or even losing control of their vehicles,” said Minister Vessey. “Freeze-thaw cycles can be very hard on the Island’s roads, so drivers are advised to watch out for frost heaves and potholes.”
