Milder weather is just around the corner, and that means Islanders who transport goods should prepare for spring weight restrictions, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley.
“Weight restrictions are necessary to reduce the amount of damage done to Island roads once they begin to thaw,” said Minister MacKinley. “Companies that transport heavy loads should be aware that weight restrictions could be put in place at any time and they should therefore try to move heavy loads as soon as possible.”
The department will serve notice in local media a few days in advance of the restrictions, but the need can come very quickly depending on the weather. Overweight permits will not be issued by the Department during spring weight restrictions. Last year, the restrictions came into effect on February 22 and remained in place until early April.
Other road users are advised that spring weather can present a whole new set of driving challenges; therefore, drivers are reminded to pay attention and drive safely.
“In the spring, when the frost starts to thaw, Island drivers must keep a close eye on the road to avoid damaging or even losing control of their vehicles,” said Minister MacKinley. “Freeze-thaw cycles can be very hard on the Island’s roads, so drivers are advised to watch out for frost heaves and potholes.”
