Every year around this time, the Department of Transportation and Public Works tries to reduce the amount of damage done to Island roads by implementing spring weight restrictions. These restrictions reduce the maximum load allowed per axle for larger trucks, which helps preserve the provincial investment in the Island’s highways during a vulnerable period.
“Companies that transport heavy loads should be aware that weight restrictions have to be put in place once the weather starts to warm,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “Given that, heavy loads should be moved before those restrictions come in, while the frost is still in the ground, because the restrictions could be in place for several weeks and we need compliance.”
The Department will serve notice in local media a few days in advance of the restrictions, but the need can come very quickly depending on the weather. Overweight permits will not be issued by the Department during spring weight restrictions. Last year the restrictions came into effect on March 15 and remained in place until May 2.
Other road users are advised that spring weather can present a whole new set of driving challenges. Therefore drivers are asked to pay attention and drive safely.
“In the spring, when the frost starts to thaw, Island drivers must keep a close eye on the road to avoid damaging or even losing control of their vehicles,” says Minister MacKinley. “Freeze-thaw cycles can be very hard on the Island’s roads, so drivers are advised to watch out for frost heaves and potholes.”
