February 27, 2004 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]The Department of Transportation and Public Works today issued an update on road conditions and a general travel advisory. The high winds and snowfall over the last twenty four hours have made snow clearing operations more challenging all across the Island, particularly in the Eastern part of the Island. Incidents of reduced or no visibility are occurring and will continue to occur as long as the winds and snow fall continue. “Our plows are out working now to keep roads open. The combination of snow and winds has reduced the visibility on the roads generally and in some spots is creating conditions of zero visibility,” said Alan Maynard, Director of Highway Maintenance. Currently, the Department is advising the public that it is dangerous to travel under these conditions and that travel should only be undertaken when absolutely necessary. “If members of the public aren’t able to avoid traveling, then we would ask drivers to please exercise caution when driving under these conditions. This will help enhance the safety of the traveling public and our crews working to clear the roads,” said Maynard.Media Contact: Jeff Himelman
