Road Check Event Improves Safety on Island Highways

During the first three days of June, provincial Commercial Vehicle Officers and local law enforcement agencies participated in the annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Road Check event. The international event focussed on improving highway safety by providing inspections on commercial vehicles and providing information to commercial vehicle operators. This year’s Road Check focussed on the North American Standard Level 1 Inspection which examines all of the following: driver’s license, medical examiner’s certificate and waiver, alcohol and drugs (if applicable), driver’s record of duty status, hours of service, seatbelt, vehicle inspection report, the braking system and coupling devices.

This year, a total of 135 vehicles were inspected at the provincial scales at Borden-Carleton. Of those, 16 vehicles were placed out of service for equipment violations and 4 operators were cited for log book violations.

“These results show that commercial vehicle operators in the province take safety very seriously,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “I am very encouraged by the relatively low number of vehicles that had equipment problems, and by the low number of operators who were found to have log book violations.”

Last year, a total of 93 commercial vehicles were inspected and 11 were found to be out of service.

“These sorts of events really help promote a spirit of co-operation between Highway Safety officials and commercial operators,” says Minister MacKinley. “They also provide a great refresher for operators who work very hard to keep their vehicles safe.”
