Beginning this week, commuters on Charlottetown Transit busses will be treated to some story reading, when staff from the Confederation Centre Public Library travel along and read to children on the bus.
"Stories on the Bus" is an outreach program developed by the Confederation Centre Public Library in partnership with Charlottetown Transit. Each month from August to December, on a chosen Friday morning, someone from the Confederation Centre Public Library will ride one of the Charlottetown Transit buses and read to any children on board who would like to hear a story. Each month the staff member will take a different route, covering more of the community and offering the program to more transit customers.
“I congratulate the Confederation Centre Children’s Library staff and Charlottetown Transit for taking this initiative,” said Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Elmer MacFadyen. “In addition to making the bus ride a little more enjoyable for children, this program will support parents and caregivers in encouraging their children to enjoy reading in any place and at any time.”
For the first story time, which kicks off this Friday, a library staff member will board the Route 2 bus at the Confederation Centre at 10:00 a.m. and travel to the Charlottetown Mall, arriving at 10:37 a.m. There will be a wait at the Charlottetown Mall until 11:25 a.m., when the staff member will again board the bus and read stories on the return trip to the Confederation Centre.
The "Stories on the Bus" schedule is as follows:
Friday, August 25, 10 a.m., Route 2 Bus
Friday, September 15, 10 a.m., Route 3 Bus
Friday, October 13, 10 a.m., Route 4 Bus
