Restoration of Marchbank’s Pond Underway

Communities, Land and Environment
Work is underway to repair a washed out dam at Marchbank’s Pond in Prince County, says Minister of Communities, Land and Environment Robert Mitchell.

“Our department heard from local residents that Marchbank’s Pond is a valued asset to their community that holds great memories for many,” said Minister Mitchell. “We are pleased to be able to respond to the community by restoring the pond to a habitat where Islanders can once again enjoy great fishing, canoeing, bird watching and many other outdoor activities.”

The dam breached at Marchbank’s Pond as the result of overwhelming water flow following a winter of excessive amounts of snow and heavy rainfall. It is believed that the existing dam is about 100 years old. The breach impacted the fish passageway and also contributed to the washout of a local bridge and roadway.

“We are very happy with the support we are getting to make sure this project happened,” said Cascumpec Bay Watershed Association Chair Dave Crocker as he toured the site with Minister Mitchell.

The restoration project will take place throughout the fall in partnership with the Cascumpec Bay Watershed Association with funding support from the Department of Communities, Land and Environment and the National Wetland Conservation Fund.
